A very hungry Luna eyeing a giant plate of spaghetti next to a birthday cake

Lesson 5 of 40 · win the Hungry Hero badge

Ho fame! — il verbo avere

Having, and the things avere really means

Luna's tummy just rumbled so loudly the pigeons flew away. In Italian she doesn't say «I am hungry» — she says «I HAVE hunger».

🎯 By the end you can…

  • Say your age
  • Say you are hungry, thirsty, hot, cold, sleepy, scared
  • Say what you own

🎬 Listen to the scene

Tap a line to hear it, then say it back louder than Luna barks.

  • How old are you?

  • I'm twelve. And you?

  • I'm forty! Are you hungry?

  • Yes, I'm very hungry.

🔑 avere — to have

Adam's tip: The h is silent — ho sounds like «o».

🧩 Where English uses to be, Italian uses avere

  • ho fame / sete — I'm hungry / thirsty
  • ho caldo / freddo — I'm hot / cold
  • ho sonno / paura — I'm sleepy / scared
  • ho vent'anni — I'm twenty

🤯 Wow fact

In Italian you HAVE your age too: «ho dieci anni» — I have ten years.
