Il campanile

The Ghirlandina of Modena at golden hour

Did you know?

A campanile is a bell tower. Modena's is called the Ghirlandina: about 86 metres tall, white marble, and standing a little apart from the cathedral so the bells ring out across the whole town.

It leans very slightly, and its name comes from the little twisting stone garland โ€” ghirlanda โ€” around the spire. The tower, the duomo and Piazza Grande together are a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Modena is in Emilia-Romagna too, and it is famous for three more things: balsamic vinegar, Pavarotti and very fast red cars.

In Modena, families keep barrels of balsamic vinegar in the attic, sometimes older than the grandparents. A few drops go on cheese, or even on strawberries.

Adam is from Emilia-Romagna โ€” visit his home region.
