Il Carnevale
Carnival masks in Venice
Did you know?
Venice's Carnevale fills the city with masks for the weeks before Lent. The plain white mask is called the bauta.
Masks once let anyone talk to anyone — a servant could joke with a duke, as long as nobody's face could be seen.

Verdi wrote his operas in the countryside near Parma, and Pavarotti was a Modena boy who used to teach at school before he sang for the world.
