Il lido

Striped umbrellas by the sea

Did you know?

An Italian beach is organised into stabilimenti: neat rows of striped umbrellas you hire for the day, each with its own number.

In August much of the country closes and heads to the sea for Ferragosto, the holiday on the 15th.

The longest run of lidos is the Riviera Romagnola โ€” Rimini, Riccione, Cesenatico โ€” where the sand is soft and the piadina stands stay open all day.

Our seaside is the Riviera Romagnola: kilometres of soft sand, striped umbrellas in tidy rows, and piadina stands the whole way along.

Adam is from Emilia-Romagna โ€” visit his home region.
