L'opera

A night at the opera

Did you know?

Opera was invented in Italy around 1600, which is why so many musical words โ€” piano, forte, allegro โ€” are Italian.

At La Scala in Milan the audience is famously honest: wonderful singing gets shouts of 'bravo', and everything else gets silence.

Two giants came from Emilia-Romagna: Giuseppe Verdi, who wrote his operas near Parma, and Luciano Pavarotti, born in Modena.

Verdi wrote his operas in the countryside near Parma, and Pavarotti was a Modena boy who used to teach at school before he sang for the world.
