La piazza

A Vespa on the piazza at sunrise

Did you know?

Almost every Italian town is built around a piazza — a wide open square where the church, the caffè and the market all look at each other.

In the morning the piazza belongs to deliveries and scooters; by evening it belongs to children chasing footballs and grown-ups standing about chatting.

In my region people often say ciao, bèla! and add a friendly ehi to everything. Our dialect is soft and sing-song, and grown-ups still use it at the market.

Adam is from Emilia-Romagna — visit his home region.
