Lesson 27 of 40 ยท win the Ne & Ci Ninja badge

Ne voglio ancora, ci vado spesso โ€” ne e ci

The little words ne and ci

Luna has eaten a mysterious number of biscuits, and you go to the park more often than anyone admits. Two tiny words are about to become your favourites.

๐ŸŽฏ By the end you canโ€ฆ

  • Use ne to talk about a quantity of something
  • Use ci to talk about going to or being in a place
  • Answer quantity questions without repeating the noun

๐ŸŽฌ Listen to the scene

Tap a line to hear it, then say it back louder than Luna barks.

  • How many ice creams did you eat today?

  • I ate three of them. Don't tell mum.

  • Do you often go to the park with Luna?

  • Yes, I go there every day.

๐Ÿ”‘ ne โ€” of it / of them

  • Quanti fratelli hai? โ€” Ne ho due. (of them, I have two)
  • Vuoi del pane? โ€” Sรฌ, ne voglio un po'.
  • With a number or quantity in the passato prossimo, the participle agrees: Ne ho mangiate tre (mele).

๐Ÿงฉ ci โ€” there / about it

QuestionAnswer with ci
Vai al mare?Sรฌ, ci vado.
Sei mai stato a Roma?Sรฌ, ci sono stato.
Pensi agli esami?Sรฌ, ci penso spesso.

๐Ÿคฏ Wow fact

Ne can replace a whole quantity โ€” 'ne ho tre' means 'I have three of them' in just two syllables. Efficient, like Luna at snack time.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Say it fast, say it silly

Ne voglio ancora, ci vado spesso, ne ho tre!
